ARTS & CULTURE MASTER PLAN

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

Surprise is developing its first Arts & Culture Master Plan, and we need your help shaping it!

The master plan will help us to better express the uniqueness and artistic vitality of Surprise by setting the standard and strategic direction for how we continue to implement and enjoy arts and culture in our community.

Public art helps us celebrate our heritage; communicates our direction; and characterizes our sense of place. Thoughtfully implemented public art and cultural programing will define “Surprise” to ourselves and project our special qualities and competitive advantages to visitors and investors. In this way, our Arts & Culture Master Plan doubles as an important economic development tool!

The plan will define three main outcomes that will help our city’s Arts & Cultural Advisory Commission and City Council as they make decisions regarding arts & culture:

  • REACH: How do we expand the Surprise Arts & Cultural Advisory Commission’s (SACAC) scope in terms of who sees, creates and participates in Arts & Culture in Surprise?
  • DEPTH: How do we expand the SACAC's effectiveness?
  • INVESTMENT: How do we bring new resources to the SACAC?

The people of Surprise are creative, spirited, and ingenious, and that’s what we are trying to capture as we develop this plan.

EVENTS

Summer Public Outreach

During the first week of June 2017, the City will be conducting a series of public outreach events to gather input for how we continue to implement and enjoy arts and culture in Surprise.  The focus of these events will be inviting engaged members and professionals of the arts community to participate in a roundtable discussion that will help to shape that plan.

These meetings are open to the public and community input is essential to creating a plan that represents our city’s uniqueness and artistic vitality. That is why we want your help identifying our arts and cultural strengths and weaknesses, strategies to support and grow our strengths and solutions to overcome our weaknesses.

Whether you’re an artist, performer, event host/organizer, or concerned member of the Surprise’s community, we invite you to attend one of the meetings to offer your insight at one or more of roundtable discussions below.

Future Fall 2017 Public Outreach

As part of the public outreach for the Arts & Culture Master Plan, the City will be continuing to gather input that will shape the Arts and Culture.  The primary audience during the fall engagements will be the residents and visitors of Surprise to assure that a complete and diverse voice is heard.

Staff, in partnership with the Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission, will host events at various locations throughout the City as well as be present as other community events.  The shaping of this Arts and Culture Master Plan is balanced between the professionals of the industry and the residents and visitors when sculpting the standard and strategic direction for Surprise.

The dates and times of the fall public outreach meetings have yet to be determined.  Please check back or register for updates.

DEFINING ARTS AND CULTURE

Arts & Culture can be visual media or performing arts. They can be commissioned by a public entity, a private entity under public requirements or initiated by an artist using physical spaces formally or informally and permanently or temporarily visible in a publicly accessible realm. For the purposes of the Surprise Arts & Culture Master Plan, “Arts & Culture” falls into the following categories:

  • City initiated and implemented projects and facilities
  • Private developers’ installations and facilities
  • Donations to the City
  • Arts Programing and Arts Organizations located in the City

The City of Surprise is a giant gallery with everything from café walls, bus stop shelters, utility boxes, City Hall, office windows, planters and awnings used as canvases.
